CROSS GENE 누나 너 말야 (Noona, You)

Cross Gene

Cross Gene is back, you guys. They are baaaack~

I feel bad for doing this, but I still haven’t listened to Teen Top’s comeback yet. I went through several sites and read through the comments and it seems they are sticking to their cool, suave image which they developed in Missing and I’m Sorry. Last year’s Ah Ah was such a fun song and I still have that song on my playlist. I get that they want to keep evolving their sound. But to me, Teen Top will always suit fun and upbeat songs the best. (I will give it a listen eventually and who knows, maybe it’ll grow on me.)

That being said, Cross Gene is actually the first comeback for me this year. And I was beyond excited for this!

Their last comeback was so amazing. Both conceptually and musically. I loved everything about “나하고 놀자” or ‘Play With Me‘. From the makeup to the styling. Sangmin’s hair was a different story, though.

It’s no different this time around.

However, unlike ‘Play With Me‘, I did not like it right away. The first listen was a little confusing, I’m not going to lie. The second listen was a lot smoother and by the third loop, I started to get the hang of it and now it’s playing in the background as I type this.

I have to say, I do like this high energy song and I can see myself having it on my phone playlist all year round. But it did sound like they put in every genre they could imagine into it. You’ll have to listen to it several times before you start to like it, I suppose. Compared to their last Korean comeback, I do think this was a generic mess. I still like it, in the end, but maybe that’s because I’m just a dedicated fan…? Who even knows/cares?

I cannot wait to check out their live stage!

The music video was fun – the boys were set to rescue their Noona from two fiends, employing several amusing props (even a basketball and a skateboard) to do so. They even broke out in ritual dance and lip-sync sequences during their attempts to save their beloved. Spoiler alert, haha, the girl got tired of waiting for her heroes and eventually set herself free. In the end, she punishes her heroes and captors alike. The expressions of the boys had me in splits, especially Sangmin’s. The boys just seemed so open and expressive and they seemed to be having fun, which was such a welcome break from all the lip-rubs we see oh-so-often in music videos.

Some of you might even recognize their beautiful Noona. I remember her as one of the MC’s on Get It Beauty. Her name is Kim Jung Min. ^^

The styling was fun, quirky and loud. The jackets were so interesting and I noticed quite a few of the boys with fringed jackets. I also noticed a lot of faux-fur coats that just appealed to me, even more so because of my current attire – sitting here in shorts in this devious chilly weather is a crime. Loud and fun prints along with beautiful sweaters were also sprinkled throughout the video, coupled with interesting textures and lengths.

I particularly liked Shin’s styling.

My beloved Takuya’s hair was something that concerned me, though. His styling seemed rushed. Perhaps he was last in line and merely got the short end of the stick? In some shots, his hair was perfection (much like his entire self *coughs*). In others, they looked crunchy and just plain wrong.

I think 2016 may just be the Year of Cross Gene. I cannot wait to give their mini-album, ‘Game’, a listen as well.
What do you guys think? Are you loving their comeback? What did you think of Takuya’s hair??
