Double Trouble: MAC Media VS MAC Dark Side

MAC Media MAC Dark Side

How long has it been since I did one of these Battle posts? Last time, I think, the objects of interest were eyeliners. This time around, they’re lipsticks. MAC lipsticks, to be precise.

[Update: Instead of calling this post a Battle like I did initially, I decided to introduce a new kind of post altogether. Battle posts compare products and chooses a winner whereas Double Trouble posts will be more on similarities between the products.]

Previously, I likened Battle posts to Pokémon battles. Each of the products have gone through  thorough testing and have been put up against one another, almost like a Pokémon battle. Similarly, like any old Pokémon battle, the winner will have the title and all the glory, of course.

This isn’t necessarily a post that follows all the guidelines of my previous Battle posts. This post is a lot more flexible and there’s no clear winner as such. Just a recommendation.

I’m just here today to discuss the similarities between these two MAC lipsticks. Tonal similarities, mostly.

MAC Media MAC Dark Side

From the swatch itself, you can easily determine how similar these two shades are. They are both shades of burgundy. Media has more brownish purple tones in it whilst Dark Side is a true, deep burgundy.

Media has a satin finish. It’s also the more drying one of the two. Sensitive and unprepared lips, beware. It has a tendency to bunch up and flake off. It’s best suited for hydrated and well-prepared lips. Having said that, the hue itself is gorgeous. It’s a burgundy with rich purple and brown undertones. It’s one of those dark hued lip products that everyone should have around.

Dark Side is the more wearable one between the two. Not only is the colour more forgiving but the formula is a lot easier on the lips as well. It’s a true burgundy. It wears well and fades off gracefully unlike Media.

The point is, look at the tonal similarities between these two. I mean, with the vast array of colours that MAC has, I’m sure these two aren’t the only similar-looking lipsticks within the brand. Unless you’re a lipstick collector or someone who is really into makeup, you could get either of the two.

I’d recommend Dark Side.

Even if I have an emotional bond with Media (long story short, it’s the first “expensive” lipstick I bought with my own money), I would ask you to go for Dark Side.
