Review: MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in ‘Fashion Legacy’.

MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour Fashion Legacy

If you’re in the market for a good liquid lipstick, you might want to give this range a look.

THE BACKSTORY: I haven’t always had the best luck with liquid lipsticks. More often than not, I end up giving them to my girlfriend, who, by the way, has bulletproof lips. She seems to enjoy matte formulas the way I enjoy water tints or sheer lipsticks. Well, opposites attract.

THE PRODUCT: Initially, the consistency of the liquid lipstick is quite runny and liquidy. But as soon as you start with your application, it begins to set, so you have to be quick and precise with it.

It is very opaque and ridiculously pigmented. The opacity is such that you can easily cover your lips without having to dip back into the product. Unless, of course, you have Lindsey Wixson lips.

I do like the applicator here. It’s a flat, tear-drop applicator and its sharp edges make it easy for you achieve a precise lip-line.

Once the product sets, you’re good to go. It’s supremely long-lasting and it will last even through the oiliest of meals.  Even if you’re not indulging in a little eating, you won’t find it uncomfortable or drying like other liquid lipsticks. It does have a powdery feel to it but it isn’t too annoying. It also doesn’t crumble and flake as easily as other liquid lipsticks. However, I do feel the crumbling/flaking will be centred around how well you take care of your lips.

Like I mentioned before, you must prep your lips well if you’re in the mood to wear a liquid lip-colour. Prep with a lip-scrub and a good, emollient lip balm. You can even use your toothbrush to gently exfoliate your lips if you don’t possess a lip-scrub. Be sure to take off excess lip-balm before applying the liquid lipstick and you’re golden.

The girlfriend loves this formula. Like I said, she adores matte lipstick formulas. It’s her favourite red lip-colour. “Highly pigmented,” she said to me. “I’ll definitely repurchase it,” she added as she noted that she’d have to save up quite a bit of money in order to do so. Cool, kid, cool. You’ve come a long way. Own it and wear it well. Ah, I feel like the wise-beyond-his-years sage who lives on a mountain-top.

Did this just take a weird turn?

Ugh, do you see the fading henna on my arm? It’s pretty on other girls, sure, but it isn’t something I personally enjoy. Anyway, here’s a fresh swatch of ‘Fashion Legacy’.

‘Fashion Legacy’ after it has somewhat dried down and set.

SHADES AVAILABLE: There are plenty of shades available in this line. It has several nudes, some reds, a couple of pinks, a few “vampy” shades and a couple of other out-of-the-box shades like teal and black. I currently spot 29 shades on the MAC website.

  • Fashion Legacy is a true, fire-engine red that brightens your skin whenever you have it on.

Excuse this selfie. I don’t take selfies. I’m horrible at them. But I wore this colour when I went out for dinner one time. I also remember using my beloved Three Powder Blush in ’14 Beat Of Her Heart’. Also, please excuse my hair. ;_; Oh, and I must inform you – the lip-colour looked decent even after I finished my never-ending meal!

PRICE AND QUANTITY: $21 USD for 5 ml of product. Here, it currently retails for 1900 INR.

AVAILABILITY: MAC counters, MAC Cosmetics Website, Nykaa, LookFantastic etc.

Overall, I did really like this formula. I have my eye on the shade ‘Dance With Me’ at the moment. I do see myself owning it at some point in the future. You’ll see a review if I take the plunge, for sure. Also, thanks to the girlfriend for letting me give this a fair chance.

  • It's a comfortable formula.

Cons

  • The price is a little steep, but, then again, it's MAC. What else would you expect?
  • You need to make sure your lips are in a good enough condition for a liquid lipcolour or else this will crumble.
