Review: Sugar Matte As Hell Crayon Lipstick in ‘Holly Golightly’ and ‘Poison Ivy’.

Sugar Matte As Hell Crayon Lipstick

Hi, everyone. Time to get back into the swing of things. Let’s have a look at the ‘It’ lip products of the moment.

THE BACKSTORY: Have you ever bought something just because you liked its name? That seems to often be the case with me. I was just browsing through the new arrivals at Nykaa when I stumbled upon these lip crayons. One look at the name of their rich wine shade, I was sold. It’s called ‘Poison Ivy’, you guys. I could not resist. Poison Ivy is easily one of my favourite Batman supervillains. That’s enough of the backstory, let’s get on with it.

Poison Ivy’s lips in “Batman: The Animated Series” was more of a coral. In other versions, she had green lips or black lips. Never a wine lip. Choosing a shade of wine for her is intriguing, though.

THE PRODUCT: I feel like it has been quite a while since I’ve liked something as much as I like these lip crayons. They are creamy, smooth and give a semi-matte finish to the lips. The product glides on the lips, without any tugging and it honestly doesn’t accentuate lip lines much either. They last well, too. But that’s always one of the pros of matte lipsticks in general. However, even if you eat or drink, they tend to somewhat last through it. What’s great about these is that they are easier to reapply than your average matte lipstick. So, you could easily take a tea break and touch up if you wish.

If you prep your lips by wearing some lip balm beforehand, you can easily minimise the issues with lip lines, if you were to have them. They suggest exfoliating the lips before application and it is indeed always a good idea to exfoliate your lips before you apply any kind of matte lipstick.

The downside to these is that they aren’t twist-up lip crayons, like the similarly marvellous ones from Revlon. You have to sharpen them (you get a sharpener free with every pencil) and in the process, you end up losing quite a bit of product. Being a broke student, I tend to scrape up the shavings and use them too. Wow, I really go the extra mile hahaha.

SHADES: There are 4 shades available, at the moment –

  • Holly Golightly – A lovely peachy-nude shade. On me, it’s not nude enough for me to pair with a smokey eye but it is a good everyday colour. It’s heir bestselling shade  and it’s easy to see why. It’ll be a gorgeous nude for those with deeper skintones.
  • Mary Poppins – A bright fuchsia.
  • Scarlet O’Hara – A fire-engine red.
  • Poison Ivy – A beautiful shade of wine. It’s great if you are unafraid of darker lips. You can even double it up as a stain by blotting it.
